Publish or Die

I can’t believe it but the new book is being published on 28th November in New York. Any one who said publishing a book is easy is crazy. Writing the book is the easiest part and when you have done that you mistakenly think that you are fabulous and all is done. Not so. The hard work is only beginning. In fact, you are only fifty percent of the way when you hand the manuscript to the publisher; then begins six solid months of marketing and promotion.

The good news is that the solid six months is almost over, only 3 days to go.

The whole process is illuminating, not least about the inner workings of a publisher and all the things you learn the hard way. I feel I could run programmes on how to write, publish and market a book now. Next book idea?

Dream Protection

September 11th, 2009

In the last week I have come across a lot of people who are trying to counteract the incredible negative slant of the media. There is little to read other than more and more analysis of why we are where we are or detailed mind numbing arguments for one government intervention or another.  I am fed up with it and wonder what happened to journalism which takes an overview or God forbid a totally out there view. What has happened to all the questioners?

I am all on for keeping up with the hot news topics but what happens when you find the media is completely misreading your interests and determinedly telling you about things you are not interested in.  Increasingly I am simply turning off and not buying it.

I find the negativity and despair of the navel gazing commentators very destructive to the average business owner like myself who is trying to keep themselves and their staff upbeat. A prominent owner of a large recruitment firm told me that he continuously see new jobs being pulled after a very negative day in the media.

It is getting harder and harder to protect your dreams in this mind numbing atmosphere. The sad thing is if we don’t protect our business dreams when we see the lift coming we will be so down in the dumps of despair we will not be able to take advantage .

This lead me to think about Dream Protection as an immediate priority for business owners.

These are my tips for dream protection

  1. Always have a huge, big purpose in their life and dream big, no matter what anyone says. Why not dream big, it’s as easy as dreaming small
  2. Choose your confidants carefully. Be careful not to share your dreams with the wrong people, they can kill them
  3. Never absorb  the destructive negativity of others and allow your dream to be subject to their doubts
  4. Make it a rule to only share your dream with open, positive, encouraging people.
  5. Always get comfortable with your dream. Dream it, make friends with it, and become comfortable with it before you introduce it to strangers.
  6. Never share your dream at the fledgling stage.
  7. Do a vision board of your dream to make it tangible.
  8. Set out the goals which will bring you to the dream.
  9. Don’t listen to everyone’s advice.
  10. Beware the power of envy.
